New Pics: Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance – Plus, Gerard Butler is a Machine Gun Preacher

26th July 2011 By Tim Isaac

Despite a rather muted response to the first Ghost Rider movie, they’re having another go with Spirit Of Vengeance, which may still have Nic Cage in the lead but is a bit of a reboot for the franchise nevertheless. Despite a lot of people having reservations about the need for a follow-up, it got a surprisingly warm response at Comic-Con, with the audience there feeling that directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Crank) might have got things right this time.

Now the first images are here, thanks to scans from the latest issue of Empire, which suggest the flaming skulled Ghost Rider effects may be a little better this time around. And quite frankly, Idris Elba is a boon to any movie, so it’s good to see a shot of him too. This time around Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider (Cage), is hiding out in remote Eastern Europe and struggling to repress his curse. Blaze is then recruited by a sect to take on the devil (Ciaran Hinds), who wants to take over his mortal son’s body on the kid’s birthday.

It’s due out February 2012, but take a look at the new pics above and below, and if you fancy seeing an image from Machine Gun Preacher, that’s at the bottom of this post!

With a title like Machine Gun Preacher and Gerard Butler in the lead role, you could have been forgiven for assuming this would be some sort of sci-fi exploitation flick with Butler dispensing justice on the mean streets, all the time with a bible by his side. However the film is actually something a little different, as it’s a biopic of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing biker tough guy who found God and became a crusader for hundreds of Sudanese children who’d been forced to become soldiers. It’s a bit of an Oscar-bait flick, and will arrive in the UK early January 2012. But take a look at the first pic above. (Image via CinemaBlend)
