Captain Planet, he’s a hero, he’s going to take pollution down to zero, and now he’s going to get a live action film. Well, to be honest I doubt he is, but nevertheless producer Don Murphy has signed a deal with Cartoon Network to develop a live-action motion picture based on Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
Murphy has worked on the likes of the Transformers movies, as well as the likes of Shoot ‘Em Up, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Apt Pupil, Natural Born Killers and the upcoming Real Steel, and now he reckons the blue-face, green-haired, superpowered eco-warrior is a good bet. Even in the 90s kids were aware Captain Planet was a tad dumb, so goodness knows what modern audiences would think. However it was quite fun, with the world’s first animated environmental series being about a group of young people who combine their special powers (The Planeteers) to summon Captain Planet, an environmental superhero, to battle the world’s worst eco-villains.
“We are extremely excited about bringing the good Captain back to life,” said Murphy. “His adventures are known worldwide and he is recognised across generations. We expect to make a spectacular series of films with the amazing team at Cartoon Network.”
To be honest, unless they’re thinking of this as a small TV movie, I can’t actually see this happening. Captain Planet simply doesn’t have the cool-factor to sustain a big budget movie. It’d be kind of like giving the Green Cross Code Man a film. Really, the environment could do with a better superhero than Captain Planet. (Source: THR)
