With director David Yates now finished with Harry Potter, he’s mulling his future options. Having made the last four Potter pics, he’s much in demand, and now Vulture reports on several possibilities he may be mulling over.
For a while Yates has been attached to a biopic of Al Capone, called Cicero, and it appears that’s moving forward as Tom Hardy is now in line for the main role in the flick. It’ll chart the rise of the infamous gangster, with a script by Wild Bunch writer Walon Green, based on his own unusued TV pilot. It could well be the start of a trilogy, with this one seeing Capone become a feared gangster, a second film looking at him at the height of his infamy and the third charting his fall (with his final years marked by a mental and physical deterioration due to late stage syphilis).
It’s all still at an early stage yet, and neither Yates or Hardy will definitely be involved, but they’re both very interested. Vulture says other possibilities for the director include a multi-film version of Stephen King’s The Stand and a movie based on Vertigo Comics’ series Fables, both of which he’s likely to be offered by Warner Bros. The Stand has had huge problems getting to the screen due to its complex nature and rabid fans (who hate the idea of anyone tampering with it), and even Yates may have difficulty untangling it into a decent movie – or even three movies.
Fables meanwhile is more feasible. It sees fairytale characters living in a section of New York called Fabletown, with reformed carnivore the Big Bad Wolf now a policeman, investigating murders, while Snow White and Prince Charming are divorced (due to his infidelity) and he’s the Deputy Mayor.
Who know which of these, if any, Yates will do, but the idea of a Capone flick with Tom Hardy in it does sound good.
