In the last couple of days there’s been a lot of confusion over whether a new Evil Dead movie is about to go into production. There’s no doubt one was in the works a year or two back, but little had been heard about it recently, and nobody expected it to go into production anytime soon. Then a report surfaced over at Dread Central that said, Sam Raimi’s longtime editor, Bob Murawski was in Michigan to begin work on the long talked about fourth entry into the Evil Dead franchise, which will be a small indie thing like the first two.”
Most assumed this was a mistake and Murawski was actually there to work on Raimi’s Oz: The Great And Powerful, which is also due to start shooting soon in the state. However Bruce Campbell’s new Twitter (which, it should be pointed out, is yet to be verified) seemed to back up the report, ‘saying Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.’
Now it appears the whole thing has been confirmed, as Bloody Disgusting says that while Raimi won’t direct, it is indeed a quasi remake (rather than a straight Evil Dead IV, as some had thought) and that it will be directed by Federico Alvarez. He’s best known for the short Panic Attack (which you can watch here), which sees giant robots attacking a city, but was made for next to no money.
It appears it will indeed be a low budget flick, in the vein of the first Evil Dead movie, and the shooting time and location appears to be a deliberate move to ensure Raimi is close by and can have at least a little say in what’s going on.
