Among the animation cognoscenti, any Studio Ghibli release is something to get excited about, and while Arrietty may not be directed by Hayao Miyazaki, it’s still looks like it’s shot through with the studio’s trademark style. It also continues Ghibli’s interest in Britain and the work of UK authors, as following Howl’s Moving Castle (based on a book Diana Wynne Jones), Arrietty was inspired by Mary Norton’s classic, The Borrowers. Tiny 14 year old Arrietty lives under the floorboards of an old house with her father and mother. Their peaceful life is dramatically changed when the ever curious Arrietty accidentally allows herself to be seen by Sho, a sickly but well-intentioned (and full-sized) 12 year old boy. The fledgling friendship between the two lonely children causes Haru the housekeeper to become aware of the borrowers’ existence. The family are forced to choose between staying in their well-established home or leaving for the uncertainty of the great outdoors. The movie will reach UK cinemas of July 19th.
