Charlie Day is one of those faces you’ll probably recognise, even if you don’t know his name. He’s seemed poised for a while to break big in the movies, but has so far had his greatest success on the small screen in the series It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. However he’s got a leading role in the upcoming Horrible Bosses and now Variety reports that he’s in talks to join the cast of Guillermo Del Toro’s robots-versus-aliens flick, Pacific Rim.
Not a lot is known about the role, beyond the fact Day would play a professor. As Day is known for his self-deprecating wit, he’d presumably be the comic relief alongside the more serious hero, played by Charlie Hunnam (Idris Elba is also rumoured to be close to signing up too).
The movie revolves around humanity’s fight against an other-worldly menace that threatens to devour the planet. The only way for us to fight back is to create massive human-controlled robots. The film is influenced by ‘mecha’ a subgenre popular in Japanimation, which sees people piloting enormous human or animal shaped robots (think Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but not rubbish).
Shooting on Pacific Rim is scheduled to start in the autumn for release Summer 2013. Personally, as we haven’t had a Del Toro film since 2008’s Hellboy II, I can’t wait!
