Ever since Jurassic Park III came along and screwed up the franchise, there’s been talk about making a fourth dino movie (it was dreadful, but JP3 still made a lot of money). It’s a project that’s rumbled on and on, one minute seeming possible, while the next someone will come along to say the idea is dead. The death of creator Michael Crichton initially seemed to put a full stop on the film, but there’s still been on-and-it talk about it ever since.
Now some concrete news has come forward, with THR reporting that Steven Spielberg has been meeting with Thor screenwriter Mark Protosevich to go over idea for another installment in the franchise. The two have apparently met twice to try and fashion a strong story for a fourth dino flick. Protosevich was hired by Spielberg previously to rewrite a remake of Oldboy, before that fel to bits due to rights issues.
Both Universal, which released the Jurassic Park trilogy, and Spielberg’s camp are apparently keen to stress that no one has been engaged to write a script and that the discussions have been purely exploratory. However it seems almost foolish that they haven’t made another movie before now, considering how popular the first three were, so getting a new one going seems almost a no-brainer. And I wouldn’t be surprised if they were already thinking about the box office potential of tyrannosaurs in 3D.
While it would be great if Spielberg directed, it’s fairly safe to say he’s only eyeing this project as a producer, but nevertheless, it’s looking liek Jurassic Park IV is more a reality than it has been in a long time.
