While news that a company had ditched a pair of writers before they’d even finished the first draft of a script would normally be a sign they didn’t like their work, in the case of the follow-up to TRON: Legacy, there is a decent reason. Originally Disney hired the writers of the first film, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, to pen the sequel, however CBS has just picked up the duo’s fairy-tale pilot, Once Upon a Time, and now the writers are indisposed (they also have loads of other scripts they may have to put to one side because of their new TV job).
However, THR reports that Disney has already found a replacement though in the form of David DiGilio, who wrote Eight Below in 2008 and came out of the studio’s writing program. It is a tad worrying news, as it’s the sort of hire Hollywood often makes when they want be able to exert absolute control over what someone comes up, which is rarely good for the eventual movie. Perhaps that concern is unfounded though.
While it’s presumed Jospeh Kosinski will direct the sequel, he’s not officially signed on and has several other projects in the works, so we’ll just have to wait and see. It’s been suggested anyway that with the first film not doing as much business as Disney had hoped, a sequel’s fate will depend on how well the animated Tron Uprising series does when it debuts next year, and if that suggests there’s defintiely more interest in the Tron worls. So even though a script is underway, it’s no guarantee we’ll see the film.
