Hollywood loves its reboots, and in the last 24 hours new writers have been announced for two of the do-overs that are currently in the works. First up, THR reports that Fox has hired Fringe writer/producer Brad Caleb Kane to pen their Daredevil reboot. He is apparently a major Daredevil fan, and will base his screenplay on Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s ‘Born Again’ arc from the comic book series. It’s an incredibly acclaimed story, so Kane will have fanboys watching over his shoulder and a tough job if he wants to please them.
The story sees Matt Murdock/Daredevil’s girlfriend selling his secret identity to get money to fund her drug-habit. The info falls into the villainous Kingpin’s hands, who sets out to destroy Murdock’s life and make him hit rock bottom. It’s renowned for its gritty take on the character. With Kane have done the fantastical in Fringe and the more realistic with the script for Brooklyn’s Finest, he could be a good choice. David Slade is developing and attached to direct the Daredevil reboot.
Also up for a do-over is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes planning a new live-action take on the characters. Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec have now been hired to write it, according to Deadline. As with Brad Caleb Kane, Appelbaum and Nemec have come through the JJ Abrams factory to find screen success, having been writers and producers on Alias and then penning the screenplay to the Abrams’ produced fourth Mission: Impossible movie, Ghost Protocol.
There’s little news on the direction the duo will take the heroes in a half-shell, but don’t be shocked if the TMNT crew get a bit grittier too, as that seems to be the in thing at the moment.
