Warner Bros. has been eyeing a new Tarzan franchise for years, but it’s been a tough process, with the entire thing almost derailed last year when director Stephen Sommers left the movie and things pretty much went back to square one.
However now the studio has kicked things up a gear by hiring Footloose helmer Craig Brewer to write and direct their new version of Tarzan. Deadline reports the studio closed a deal with Brewer after liking his pitch for the project, which spans over three movies, preferring it to another script they were considering by Adam Cozad (although they may work some of that one into Brewer’s films).
Tarzan was created by author Edgar Rice Burroughs in the 1912 novel Tarzan of the Apes. There have been numerous adaptations of the character throughout the years, in both movies and television. The character was on aristocratic British stock but was raised by apes in the jungle. However specific story details for this new version aren’t known yet.
Brewer apparently wants to make this his next film, although it isn’t known when it might start shooting.
