As expected, Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has topped the US box office with $90.1 million. Some are saying it’s a bit of a disappointment compared to the $100 milllion plus openings of Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, but considering those movies got a very mixed reaction, On Stranger Tides was always going to come in lower than them, and $90.1 million is nothing to be sniffed at. It may be lower than the last two pirates films, but it still marks the best debut of the year so far. The real test though will be how it holds up in the coming weeks, as more tentpole competition is launched against it.
Bridesmaids stayed at number two on the chart, falling only 20% in its second week, suggesting the movie is drawing exceptionally strong word of mouth.
Although it only made it to number 12 on the chart, Woody Allen’s Midnight In Paris did very well, making $579,000 on only six screens. That’s the best per-location average of the year so far, and more than tripled the opening of his last movie.
