Wouldn’t you like to see Stephen Fry in Middle Earth? The Hobbit is the sort of movie that almost seems to be crying out for the erudite wit of the QI master, and now it’s going to get it, as Peter Jackson himself has confirmed Stephen will indeed be in the movies, even if it isn’t the most massive of parts.
Here’s what Jackson had to say on his Facebook page, along with news on a few other minor cast additions: ‘We are thrilled to confirm that Stephen Fry will be playing The Master of Laketown. Ive known Stephen for several years, and were developing a DAMBUSTERS movie together. In addition to his writing skills, hes a terrific actor and will create a very memorable Master for us.
‘The Masters conniving civil servant, Alfrid will be played by Ryan Gage. Ryan is a great young actor who we originally cast in a small role, but we liked him so much, we promoted him to the much larger Alfrid part.
‘Last, and certainly not least, is Conan Stevens, who will be playing an Orc called Azog (Orcs are never called Roger or Dennis for some strange reason). And yes thats his nameConan! Isnt that cool? Azog is played by Conan!’
It is interesting to see though, that while in the UK he’s almost trademarked as a national treasure, elsewhere Stephen Fry is seen primarily as a writer. Incidentally, the Master Of Laketown is the elected leader of a community built on top of the long lake. Bilbo and co. stop off in the town during their quest, but aren’t exactly welcomed with open arms.
