For quite some time now Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has shown interest in rebooting The Flintstone somehow, but Hannah Barbera (when MacFarlane used to work) and Warner Bros. TV, has been somewhat reluctant to let him go ahead, perhaps worried that the occassional Flintstones poop joke on Family Guy was what he wanted to do with the entire series.
However, now Seth has finalised a deal to reboot The Flintstones for a new TV series and movie, according to THR.
No plot details were given on the TV series or film, although 20th Century Fox Television will produce both projects along with Warner Bros. Television, who have the rights to the original The Flintstones series, which aired from 1960 to 1966. MacFarlane was on hand to help Fox announce it’s upcoming season (his Family Guy, Cleveland Show and American Dad have all been renewed), saying “One of the first things that I drew when I was 2 years old was Fred Flintstone.”
It is said that Warner TV was concerned at how The Flintstones will be reimagined with Seth MacFarlane, who is known for his edgier brand of humour. However it appears he plans to keep the tone of the show similar to the original, with the updates being along the lines of, “What’s the animal version of the iPod? That’s the kind of thing we have to think about.”
The TV show is planned for 2013, although there’s no production timeline on a movie.
