Having been made on a minuscule budget, Monsters has made a healthy profit, which inevitably makes the film world start to think about sequels. While many would hope that any sequel to the film would once more have Garth Edwards at the helm, he’s hopefully moving onto bigger and better things, and so Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas are directing Monsters 2, according to Variety.
Vertigo Films, the British company that backed the first film, is putting together the sequel. The movie will be set in a walled city, and is described as a ‘Heart of Darkness’ story about a man heading off to find his ‘gone native’ brother in the infected zone, which is filled with monsters. It will apparently feature different creatures than the first film, and a lot more of them this time around, which means they’ll be putting more cash in the production coffers (this one will cost around $5 million, the first was under $1 million).
Edwards is apparently backing the film and has signed off on it, sticking around as an executive producer. Also staying in that capactity is the star of the first film, Scoot McNairy, although there’s no info on whether he’ll appear in the sequel.
