Chris Pine has had a few problems really capitalising on his Star Trek fame, as waiting for the sequel to that movie, as well as the continually delayed Jack Ryan reboot, Moscow, to get made, has meant he’s had difficulty knowing exactly what he can do and when. However he did make Unstoppable, and has This Means War and Welcome To People coming.
Now he may have another, as the LA Times reports that Pine is in talks for the coming of age drama, Mud, which Jeff Nichols will direct. The film is about ‘two 14-year-boys who come across an adult fugitive of the law, the titular Mud (who would be played by Pine) and must help him escape off an island in the Mississippi. The ambiguity of the story lies with Mud, who is both an unsavory and a redemptive character and who teaches the boys as much as he learns from them.’
It all sounds a little Whistle Down The Wind (although presumably nobody will think Pine is Jesus), although the LA Times article compares it more to Huckleberry Finn.
There’s no news on how close to signing Pine is, and it will likely depend a lot on the status of Moscow and Star Trek 2.
