Quite a while ago now, it was revealed that Johnny Depp was interested in getting Rob Marshall to direct his planned remake of The Thin Man. Well, now it look like it’s going to happen, as the director has officially signed on to the project, with Warner Bros issuing a press release to confirm the fact.
It certainly suggests Depp must have been impressed with what Marshall did on the set of Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides if he’s so keen to work with him again (Disney are also trying to line both of them up for another Pirates pic).
Marshall says, John [DeLuca, Producer] and I are overjoyed at the idea of working with Johnny again, especially on such a classy and classic project. We are also thrilled to be partnering this time with such wonderful producers as Christi Dembroski and Kevin McCormick, and we are looking forward to working with Warner Bros. to create a reinvention of a beloved story.
Jerry Stahl is on scripting duties for the film, based on the Dashiell Hammett novel of the same name. The story centres on Nick Charles, who, after marrying wealthy socialite Nora Charles, decides to quit being a detective to become an alcoholic “trophy husband.” However egged on by his wife, who thinks it’s all very exciting, he ends up reluctantly investigating a murder case, reconnecting with all his old cronies along the way. The 1934 movie version spawned five sequels and a Thin Man TV series, which ran from 1957 through 1959 on NBC, so it could be Depp is looking at this as a potential franchise.
Despite Marshall coming onboard, there’s still no news on when the film may shoot.
