Although she wasn’t on a recent list of women taking meetings and/or testing for the main female roles in the remake of Total Recall, it seems the makers have decided they want Kate Beckinsale anyway, and have offered her the role of Lori, according to Deadline, opposite Colin Farrell in the lead. But then, they probably didn’t need too many auditions with her, seeing as she’s married to the film’s director, Len Wiseman.
Lori is the role Sharon Stone played in the 1990 Paul Verhoeven version, who is the wife of the main character but not not be everything she appears to be. However there’s no guarantee that’s who Lori will be in this version, as it seems to be a fusion of the 1990 film, the Philip K. Dick story ‘I Can Remember If For You Wholesale’ and some new stuff too.
While the Arnie version sees him having visions of being a secret agent on Mars, which he comes to believe are real rather than botched vacation memory implant, in the new version, it seems it’s going to be about whether or not he’s an unwitting spy for one of two rival nation states, with different sources saying different things about the extent to which Mars will be involved.
There’s still no official news on who will play the other main female part, resistance fighter Melina (played by Rachel Ticotin in the 1990 flick), although Deadline says Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are the serious contenders. It was also recently reported that Jessica Biel was offered one of the roles, but it wasn’t known which one, so she may still be in contention for Melina or has turned down Lori, opening the door for Beckinsale.
