Last time she was in a musical, she won an Oscar, and as she hasn’t had much luck since, it seems Catherine Zeta-Jones is hoping another warble might give her career a boost. This time she has joined the cast of Rock of Ages for director Adam Shankman and Warner Bros.
The actress will play one of the main primary villain, although it is a character that did not appear in the original stage musical by Chris D’Arienzo. Here’s what Adam Shankman had to say about Catherine Zeta-Jones’s character. “It’s a character that we only really came to in the last month. The character was invented to streamline the stories.”
The director went on to describe the character as a mix between Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant. Here’s what else he had to say about this villainous character. “She is this hardcore, moral majority, arch-conservative who wants to shut down rock’n roll in the great city of Los Angeles.”
Has Rock Of Ages just turned into Footloose? Did Zeta-Jones turn up at Shankman’s door demanding a role, even though a suitable one wasn’t in the original musical? Who knows.
Rock Of Ages is a jukebox musical using 80s hair metal tunes to tell the story of a small-town girl (Julianne Hough) who comes to Hollywood for the 1980s music scene and is nearly destroyed by it. Although she falls for a budding musician named Drew (Diego Boneta), she also catches the eye of Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise), an arrogant rocker at the height of his career, ends up as a stripper in a club run by Mary J Blige but also finds true love at the end.
The film starts shooting May 19th.
