After Let Me In, you’d think Matt Reeeves would want to steer clear of vampires for a bit, but Deadline reports that he’s just signed on to direct The Passage for Fix, hoping giving new life to a project that’s been stuck in development since 2007.
Reeves is now supervising a rewrite of John Logan’s script, which is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Justin Cronin.
The Passage follows what happens when a scientific experiment goes wrong, creating a horde of blood-hungry vampires set on destroying the world. It begins with a group of terminally ill cancer patients being treated with South African bat bites. At first this seems like the perfect cure, but it soon turns out that the treatment is breeding an unstoppable army of indestructible bloodsuckers who can also read minds. Before long, they set out to infect the entire populace of the world.
It’s not clear though when the film might start shooting, especially as it was only a couple of weeks ago that Reeves signed on to helm an adaptation of the Ray Nelson short story 8 O’Clock in the Morning, which was used as the basis for John Carpenter’s 1988 cult classic They Live. The Passage would seem further along in the production process, but with a new version of the script needed and Reeves perhaps wanting to do something non-vampiric first, we’ll have to wait and see.
