Disney and Jerry Bruskheimer have had The Lone Ranger in the works for ages, with the movie getting new impetus recently when Gore Verbinski signed up to direct. While it’s still a way off shooting, it’s time to think about who will play the lead role. Johnny Depp is still attached as Tonto, but they need a wholesome cowboy.
The Wrap reports that currently at the top of the wishlist is Ryan Gosling. It’s still early days though, and it’s not even completely certain whether Goslin is interested. It may partly depend on scheduling. If Verbinski wants to shoot this year, he needs to wait until Depp has finished promoting Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 and filming Dark Shadows, which would suggest a autumn start, but which time Gosling is committed to a remake of Logan’s Run. However the director has suggested it may not be ready to shoot until 2012, by which time Gosling will be free.
There doesn’t appear to be much of a rush with the movie though, although once the cast starts falling into place, hopefully it’ll find a bit more impetus.
