As expected, Rio topped the US box office, consolidating its $55 million international debut last week with another $40 million in its first three days in the US. It’s the biggest opening of the year so far over the pond, and while a pretty good start, doesn’t quite match up to many previous animated openings, including those from the same company, Blue Sky, such as Ice Age, Robots and Horton Hears A Who. However, it’s certainly not bad, and with a $90 million budget – which is relatively cheap for a 3D CGI movie – should prove to be pretty profitable.
Scream 4 meanwhile failed to scare up huge audiences. While a $19 million opening is far from a disaster, it’s a long way from previous Scream sequels, suggesting there was less nostalgia for the series than the studio had hoped.
The only other new entry in the top 10 was Robert Redford’s Lincoln assassination drama, The Conspirator, which took $3.9 million to place 9th on the chart. Although not amazing, it isn’t too bad as it was playing on far fewer screens than any other movie in the top 10.
