2011 Cannes Film Festival Line-Up Announced – Almodovar, Malick and Von Trier are in competition

14th April 2011 By Tim Isaac

The line-up for the 64th Cannes Film Festival has been announced. Robert De Niro is heading up the Palm D’Or Jury this year, but what will he be watching? Well, Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In is in competition, along with Terrence Malick’s Tree Of Life, and Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia.

Interestingly Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan, has been chosen, which seeing as it started life as a generic action flick that was going to star Hugh Jackman and be directed by Neill Marshall, isn’t the sort of movie you’d normally expect to get a competition look-in at Cannes. Also on the list are Lynn Ramsey’s adaptation of the best-selling book We Need To Talk About Kevin and Takashi Miike’s Ichimei.

Elsewhere on the bill, Gus Van Sant’s Restless will open the Un Certain Regard segment of the festival, while Woody Allen’s Midnight In Paris opens Cannes on May 11th, but won’t be in competition. Also showing out of competition are Jodie Foster’s The Beaver and Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, both of which were presumably picked to add to the star power of the event, than because they fesitval organisers feel they’re raising the level of the art of cinemas. The festival runs from the 11th to the 22nd of May.

Take a look below for the list of films that are in competition for the Palm d’Or this year, and if you want to now all the movies showing in all sections, click here (PDF).
