Andrew Garfield is Peter Parker, Emma Stone is Gwen Stacy, Rhys Ifans is The Lizard, there’s not even going to be a Mary-Jane Watson, and now it seems the upcoming Spider-man reboot has found its Uncle Ben and Aunt May in the form of Martin Sheen and Sally Field.
The veteran film and TV actors would be very good choices for the role, even if Field isn’t quite the white-haired, slightly frail old lady we normally associate with Aunt May. News broke late last night (via THR) that Sheen was in talks for a role in the movie, with Sally Field’s name appearing a couple of hours later. However while Sheen in in final negotiations for the film, Field is only in early talks, so her involvement is far less certain.
While the movie is a reboot of the franchise, giving the whole thing a different tone to Sam Raimi’s movies, it’s assumed it will follow the basic set-up of Peter Parker getting superpowers and being raised by his Aunt May after his Uncle Ben is killed (an event that spurs Peter to become a crimefighter). As a result they’re both pivotal role, and so it’s good Sony and director Marc Webb are looking at heavyweight talent to fill their shoes.
