While he’s renowned for his ridiculously large scale disaster flicks like Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, Roland Emmerich has decided it’s time for a change of pace. He’s currently working on the more sobre historical political thriller Anonymous, and now it’s been revealed he’s planning to return to the world of alien invasions, but on a far smaller scale than before.
THR has the news, and says the movie will be called The Zone. However the whole thing is super secret and so there are few details, other than that it appears the movie join the ranks of the ‘found footage’ thrillers that are popular at the moment, such as Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity. It is also known that it revolves around an alien invasion, and that there are only two major characters, ‘a haggard journalist in his 40s or 50s, the other a black man in his early to mid 20’s, the cameraman’.
Perhaps most impressive is that while Emmerich is used to working with budget of hundreds of millions, this one will cost less than $5 million. Shooting is due to begin later this month.
