While anthology films haven’t traditionally done that well, a new one is brewing that’s pulled together some great genre talent and also has a nice tongue-in-cheek slant. In 2006 directors like the Coen Brothers, Alfonso Cuaron, Gus Van Sant and Walter Salles got together to make the romantic antholohy Paris Je T’Aime (it’s since been followed by sequels set in the like of New York and Rio), and the new idea is to make a horror version entitled Paris I’ll Kill You.
However rather than just being cheap and nasty horror knock-off, they’ve gathered together some top genre directors to help with the film, in the hope of launching a franchise that, like the more romantic version, can travel round the world. Joe Dante (The Hole, Gremlins) and emerging horror-action fave Xavier Gens (Hitman, Frontière(s)) have joined the likes of Paco Plaza ([Rec]), and Ryûhei Kitamura (Midnight Meat Train) in bringing this look at the seedier side of France to the big screen. Interestingly they also signed Vincenzo Natali (Splice), who made a segment in Paris Je T’Aime
This team is joined by Christopher Smith (Creep, Severance) and the duo Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (Inside). Like Paris Je T’aime, Paris I’ll Kill You will next head to New York next another anthlogy, followed by Shanghai and Jerusalem.
The project will be shopped to buyers at the American Film Market next week. It sounds like a fun idea, and hopefully will work out better than most horror anthologies.
