Yesterday the big news was that Christopher Nolan had announced that the title of his third Batman movie would be The Dark Knight Rises (and that the much rumoured Riddler won’t be the villain). One of the titbits we inadvertantly failed to mention was that Nolan said he won’t make the movie in 3D, despite the fact studios seem slightly obsessed with the format.
Well, now HeroComplex has gone into a little more depth about that, explaining why Nolan wants to avoid the third dimension, even if he is keen to make the as much of Dark Knight Rises using IMAX cameras as he can (key action sequences of The Dark Knight used the high-resolution IMAX rigs, but the rest was shot using HD digital cameras).
Nolan hasn’t been shy in the past about expressing his reservations about 3D, but here it seems to be about the fact that, We want the look and feel of the film to be faithful to what has come before in the first two films. There was a large canvas and operatic sweep to The Dark Knight and we want to make a film that will carry on with that look and feel.
He adds, Theres an intimacy at times [with spatial illusion of the 3D effect] and we didnt want to lose scale… Our ambition for the third movie is to complete a story that has begun. This is not starting over, this not rebooting. Were finishing something, and keeping a consistency with whats come before has real value.
It also appears he wants to avoid the problems with dim images that come with 3D, something that IMAX and HD cameras don’t have an issue with. And despite no third dimension, Nolan still believes that by using IMAX extensively, “Were looking to do something technologically thats never been done before. Our ambitions are to make a great movie.
