When Dreamworks bought the rights to Daniel H. Wilson’s book, Robopocalypse, a while ago, there were rumours it may become the next directing project for Steven Spielberg. However he then decided to make War Horse, and it appeared Robopocalypse would be handed on to someone else. However Spielberg has now committed himself to direct the sci-fi robot project as his next movie, according to Deadline.
Wilson’s novel, which is due to be published in June 2011 (it wasn’t even finished when Dreamworks bought it), is already on its way to becoming a movie, with Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) assigned a few months ago to work on the screenplay. Not much is known about the story, except that it centres on the human race trying to survive a robot uprising. However, what might make it slightly more unusual is that it’s likely to be a more realistic take on robotic rampage than normal, as Wilson has a Ph.D in robotics and has spent a lot of time working on artificial intelligence
The movie is still a ways off though. Steven Spielberg won’t start shooting until January 2012 (after he’s finished and released both Tintin and War Horse, both of which are due out December 2011), with a release date set for 2013.
