Shield creator Shawn Ryan has signed on to adapt Tom Clancy’s 1993 best-seller Without Remorse for Paramount, with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci producing. While Clancy has had great success expanding his character into video games, this will be the first non-Jack Ryan movie based on a Clancy book.
Vulture has the news on Shawn Ryan’a involvement, although they don’t mention Stuart Beattie, who was hired to adapt the novel several months ago, which makes it appear Ryan will be starting from scratch rather than just doing a new draft of Beattie’s screenplay
Without Remorse follows one of Tom Clancy’s recurring characters (suggesting Pararamount sees franchise potential), John Kelly, as he seeks revenge against the Baltimore drug ring responsible for the death of his girlfriend, becoming a bit of a vigilante in the process. While the book is set in the 1970s during the Vietnam War, insiders say there is no definitive plan over whether to set the movie then or if to update it.
