Last month news emerged that Transformers producer Don Murphy was planning a big screen, 3D remake of Day Of The Triffids, and was hoping to ignite a bidding war between the studios for the right to make the pic. Well, Mandate Pictures has won the auction over Universal, and Deadline reports that this also involves the partners over at Ghosthouse Pictures, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, producing.
Raimi is apparently very keen to direct a Triffids flick, as the 1962 film version of John Wyndham’s novella was one of his favourite movies as a child. However, Raimi is known for coming and going from projects, and at the moment he’s only down to produce, so whether he will step into the director’s chair isn’t yet certain, especially as he’s got the masive Oz The Great And Powerful to make over at Disney.
The story revolves around a meteor shower which results in 99.9% of the world population growing blind. The meteors also release aggressive plants dubbed Triffids, who begin to attack the blind masses, with a few non-blind survivors trying to fend off the attack.
