It’s seems to be a bit of a favourite game in Hollywood. You announce a remake of Hellraiser, horror fans forums go into uproar, and then a few months later the idea slips into limbo, before reappearing again, just when everyone had thought they’d given up on the idea. Plans an imminent remake seemed to be completely off the table recently, with the announcement they were making a quickie, straight-to-DVD movie, which would continue the original franchise.
However, it now appears that’s merely a stopgap measure, and remake plans are going ahead, with Bloody Disgusting reporting that Drive Angry’s Patrick Lussier and My Bloody Valentine’s Todd Farmer will direct a new take on Clive Barker’s 1987 film.
Rumours earlier this week that Christian E. Christiansen was back on to helm are incorrect, however we can’t discount the associated suggestion that Dimension Film want the return of Pinhead and co. to be PG-13 rated. At the moment the studio isn’t saying anything, so we’ll have to wait and whether the cenobites really are getting kiddified.
The reboot will be an origins story, going back to the couple who move into a house, with the women discovering a hideous creature hiding upstairs, which turns out to be her former lover, who lost his soul to the S&M obsessed, supernatural cenobites, and now needs sacrifices in order to regain his earthly body and escape their clutches. Filming should begin in late 2011 or early 2012. Oh and with both Lussier and Farmer’s pedigree, it’s safe to say the film will be in 3D.
