Johnny Depp must be really impressed with what Rob Marshall’s is doing on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, as he wants the director to helm a remake of The Thin Man for Warner Bros., according to Vulture.
Although there even a writer attached to the project at the moment, Depp has been “aggressively courting” Rob Marshall to direct this new take on the 1934 classic. The actor is eager to play the lead role of Nick Charles, and will develop the movie through his Infinitum Nihil production company, along with Warner Bros.
The Thin Man, which starred William Powell and Myrna Loy, was based on the Dashiell Hammett novel of the same name. The story centres on Nick Charles, who, after marrying wealthy socialite Nora Charles, decides to quit being a detective to become an alcoholic “trophy husband.” However egged on by his wife, who thinks it’s all very exciting, he ends up reluctantly investigating a murder case, reconnecting with all his old cronies along the way. The original movie spawned five sequels and a Thin Man TV series, which ran from 1957 through 1959 on NBC.
Vulture also reports that after Rob Marshall wraps Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, he’ll start taking meetings at Universal about a big-screen adaptation of the play Wicked, so Depp may have his work cut out for him if he wants the director to take The Thin Man.
