Hollywood loves remakes, but redoing a cult classic is always a tricky proposition. Despite not getting much traction on its its initial release, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has become one of the most profitable movies ever made, thanks to decades of midnight screenings and home entertainment revenue. As a result, Fox is now gearing up for another go around, and according to Deadline, Glee’s Ryan Murphy is closing in on a deal to direct it.
It’s not Murphy first brush with the musical, as he’s just finished overseeing a Rocky Horror themed episode of Glee, which will air in the US on October 26th. As yet though, Murphy hasn’t made any commitments, but he has expressed interest, and whether he does it or not may come down to whether he has the time. Currently, not only does he have Glee to run, but he’s also developing the AIDS drama The Normal Heart and has a deal with Sony to make a movie with Julia Roberts starring. Murphy is certainly a busy man.
While it might not seem like Rocky Horror needs a do-over, especially as the original is now considered the movie that’s had the longest cinema release in history, due to the midnight screenings that still go on around the world, there’s no real reason to think that the sweet transsexual from Transylvania, Dr Frank-N-Furter, couldn’t attract new audiences in updated form.
