While Joe Carnahan had built up a good reputation with the likes of Narc and Smokin’ Aces, he got slightly pilloried for The A-Team. It seems that following that sejourn into blockbusters, he’s going back to the thrillers that made his name. He’s got the wilderness drama The Grey in the works, and now Variety reports that he’s signed on to re-write and direct Umbra.
Based on Steven Karczynski’s screenplay, Umbra is about a businessman who finds a mysterious package in his mailbox, which thrusts hilm into the middle of a secret government agency conspiracy. Running for his life while piecing together the clues, the man learns some startling truths about himself and his unwitting connection to the agency that’s hunting him.
The hope is that Umbra will be the start of a franchise. As Carnahan will be busy with The Grey for the next few months, Umbra will have to wait until he finished that flick.
