Last week, Warner announced that as they didn’t have enough time to get it done properly, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I, would only be released to cinemas in 2D on November 19th, rather than the previously announced 3D post-conversion. However they were adamant Part II would be getting the three-dimensional treatment, and it appears they’re now planning to go back to the earlier movies and turn them 3D too.
Harry Potter is the ultimate cash cow, and with the final films coming out soon, it’s little wonder that Warner is looking for ways it can milk the franchise dry. At the moment, it doesn’t appear these new 3D conversions will be getting a theatrical release, with Variety reporting that Prime Focus in London has already started work converting Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and that they will also give Harry Potter and the Order Of The Phoenix an extra dimension. The plan is that these will then be given a 3D Blu-ray release.
However, with Warner refusing to say whether this could lead to theatrical 3D reissues for all the movies, it appears the current work could be testing the waters to see whether that’s a viable option. As all 3D movies are sent to cinemas digitally, it wouldn’t necessarily be too expensive to bring out the movies again in three-dimensions, and see just how much cash they can suck from the franchise. Either way, expect plenty of 3D Harry Potter in the near future.
