It’s starting to seem like a movie that will never actually happen. First reports had Mad Max: Fury Road filming in 2009, then it got moved to July 2010. Unseasonal weather delayed the shoot until the end of the year (the ground around Broken Hill was too wet to do many of the car stunts, so production was delayed for a few months). There was the suggestion they’d finally get going in 2011, but now it appears it won’t start shooting until February 2012!
There’s no news on exactly why an extra year has been added onto the schedule, but it’s certainly bad news for the crew of mainly Aussie workers, who have now been left jobless, and according to The Australian, there are ‘fears the high Australian dollar could ultimately kill the film as its budget grows.’
Pre-production, which has already seen numerous specialised cars built, won’t resume until the end of the year. It really is starting to seem like the production is cursed, and despite plenty of interest, a cast including Tom Hardy, Geroge Miller back in the director’s chair and lots of goodwill, whether Fury Road ever really does go in front of the cameras remains to be seen.
