Although he’s known for personal, idiosyncratic efforts like Requiem For A Dream and The Wrestler, there’s little doubt that for a long time Darren Aronofsky has flirted with doing something that’s very much in the mainstream, but it’s just never happened.
He had a remake of Robocop indevelopment that collapsed when MGM started getting into financial trouble, he’s recently been on the shortlist to helm the new Superman movie, and in late August, it was said to be between him and David Slade as to who would direct Wolverine 2.
At the time most people dismissed the idea, but now that Aronfsky is out of the running for Superman (as Zack Snyder got the job), Vulture reports that Fox has officially offered him the Wolverine 2 gig, and that his agents are now in negotiations. Of course, this doesn’t mean he’ll definitely helm the movie, but there’s now a far bigger chance than most had expected. It could be that the promise of a very different Wolverine story, based on the lauded tale of the character heading to Japan, is what lured Aronofsky in.
However he has plenty of other options, with Vulture adding that as Warner didn’t offer him Superman, ‘the director is still being offered other valuable consolation prizes by Warner Bros., like Tales From the Gangster Squad’. Apparently the director is currently leaning towards Wolverine, but we’ll have to wait and see if it actually happens.
