Ever since Mamma Mia!, there’s been talk of making Jukebox musicals based on the back catalogues of numerous popular musicians and bands, but so far, few have materialised on screen. However the studios haven’t given up, and now Variety reports that Fox 2000 has won the rights to make a movie backed by the classic tunes of The Beach Boys.
Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich, In Her Shoes, 28 Days, Catch and Release) is on scripting duties, although there’s absolutely no news on what sort of story they’re planning to put around the 60s surf songs (I’d be willing to bet it’ll be a fairly insipid one though). And it certainly doesn’t sound like the movie will be based on Good Vibrations, the 2005 Broadway musical that also used the Beach Boys’ music.
Although it’s vaguely interesting idea, Mamma Mia was a bit of a unique phenomenon, and trying to capture lightning in a bottle twice is tough. In fact, I wouldn’t be shocked if this one quietly fall into development hell and is never heard of again.
