While there was much talk about how the Spider-man reboot would take Peter Parker back to high school, the makers don’t seem to be afraid to cast actors a fair amount older than their teenage counterparts in the film. Spider-man himself, Andrew Garfield, is 27, while the actress they’ve apparently picked for Mary Jane is 21.
So who is it? Well, according to Deadline, after meeting with many actresses, Sony and director Marc Webb have settled on Emma Stone as Mary Jane Watson, with an official announcement expected sometime this week. The Zombieland actress would seem a good choice for the role as Peter Parker’s most famous love interest. However that leaves the role of Parker’s other love interest, Gwen Stacy, open. (It should be noted though, that at the moment Stone has only been offered the role, and hasn’t officially accepted).
The latest rumours for that part suggest that the remaining contenders are Mia Wasikowska (Alive In Wonderland), Dianna Agron (Glee), Georgina Haig (Wasted on the Young) and Dominique McElligott (Moon). However Wasikowska is only said to be vaguely interested, while there are questions over Agron’s availability, due to the hective schedule of Glee.
And while we’re on Spider-man, there’s even talks that they want to bring Venom back and give the role to Philip Seymour Hoffman. At the moment that’s completely uncomfirmed (and sounds unlikely), but the rumour is out there.
