Although there’s a certain logic to Disney trying to make movies based on its theme park rides (a success could give life to that ride for the next 30 or 40 years), it has to be said Pirates of the Caribbean felt like a fluke. However now it seems the Hous Of Mouse has some rather grander plans – making a movie based on the entire Magic Kingdom theme park.
Variety describes the movie as being sort of like Night At The Museum, and as a potential platform that could showcase a number of high-profile Disney characters, including Mickey Mouse and friends. However at the moment, the project isn’t a particularly high priority for Disney, probably because there are numerous potential pitfalls, from trying to get the right characters from Disney’s stable, to getting a script that won’t end up detracting from the Disney legacy (after all, the Looney Tunes live action/CG flicks haven’t exactly done much for Bugs Bunny and co).
The original idea came from Ron Moore (Battlestar Galactica), and the studio is now said to be looking for another writer to take a crack, based on Moore’s first draft. It’s an interesting idea, and a success could really help the increasingly antiquated – and absent from our screens – Mickey and co., but it could also end up being a very expensive disaster.
