It’s been 10 years since Robert Zemeckis last made a live action film, but it appears he’s returning from the realm of motion capture for Timeless, which will also reunite him with the time travel genre, 25 years after Back To The Future.
Deadline reports that Warner has picked up the pitch for the film, which includes Mike Thompson writing the script, with Zemeckis and his ImageMovers company producing. The director has apparently been cozying up to Warner ever since Disney shut down his motion capture studio (although he is still making Yellow Submarine for the House Of Mouse, as is attached to Dark Like for them). Deadline also mentions that he’s expressed interest in helming the new Superman movie, but doesn’t suggest it’s likely he’ll get the job, more that it shows he looking for live action projects again.
However, as yet there’s no news on what Timeless might actually be about, other than that it’s a big tentpole flick that involves time travel. It would be nice to see Zemeckis return to live action, as while his mo-cap movies have been technically innovative, they lack the heart of his earlier work. We need another BTTF or Roger Rabbit!
