Christopher Plummer has made a bit of a career out of playing patriarchal figures – from The Sound Of Music to the Last Station – and now he’s got another one, as THR reports he’s joined the cast of David Fincher’s take on Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
The movie is currently shooting in Sweden, with Daniel Craig in the lead role of disgraced, jail-bound journalist Mikeal Blomkvist (Craig), who is hired to look into a 40-year-old possible murder, which takes him and tattooed computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) into the world of the dysfunctional, island-bound Vanger family.
However Plummer’s hiring is a bit of a surprise, as he’s taking the role that was previously slated for Max Von Sydow, an actor who it almost seemed inevitable would end up in the movie. However Von Sydow is out and Plummer is in, playing Henrik Vanger, the family patriarch who sets the plot in motion by hiring Blomkvist (Craig) to look into the possible murder of his 16-year-old niece four decades ago. Plummer does seem suited for the role, but it’s a shame if that means Von Sydow is out of the picture.
