Last week we reported that a shortlist had been drawn up to direct the upcoming Superman reboot, which Chris Nolan is overseeing. At that point, Tony Scott (Unstoppable, The Taking of Pelham 123), Matt Reeves (Let Me In, Cloverfield), Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles), Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch) were included on the list.
Now we can add Darren Aronofsky to the mix, according to the LA Times at least. However don’t take any of this as gospel, as many of the directors on the initial list said it had been news to them that they might be considered, even though all were said to have taken meetings about the movie in the initial reports. Likewise, Aronofsky is said to have taken meetings, but there’s little solid info.
The Wrestler and Black Swan director has been looking for a studio vehicle for a while, however his version of Robocop fell apart, and he was even considered for Wolverine 2, but whether Superman is a good fit depends of the new take David Goyer has come up with.
At the moment, about all that can definitely be said is that Nolan is mulling over names, with the hope he’ll be able to give his recommendation to Warner Bros. shortly, but whether Aronofsky or any of the others on the supposed shortlist will actually get the job, is impoosible to tell.
Incidentally, Moviehole is reporting that if Aronofsky does get the job, Natalie Portman is likely to follow him and play Lois Lane. However that really does seem like speculation, especially as she’s just finished playing the love interest in Thor.
