For a musician who no one ever expected to become a filmmaker, Rob Zombie has made a big splash in the world of horror, with the likes of House Of A 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects and his Halloween remake. Now he coming back with Lords Of Salem, which Deadline confirms will be his next movie.
It all seems a pretty good deal for Zombie, who’s producing the film through Haunted Films (run by the Paranormal Activity team of Jason Blum, Steven Schneider and Oren Peli) and Alliance Films, who have given him complete control over script, casting and final cut, which he certainly didnt get with the Weinsteins on his Halloween flicks – indeed he’s said making those movies was basically just a long battle to get his own way on even the smallest of things.
The movie will be “set in contemporary Salem, where the inhabitants receive a demonic visit from a 300-year old coven of witches. And knowing Zombie, that will mean lots and lots of blood and extreme violence. Zombie says of this flick “It’s so hard to make a patient movie, and if a classic like The Shining was being made now, you know some studio executive would say to cut 70 minutes out of it. “People who’ve seen the director’s cut of Halloween on DVD like it better, and these theatrical releases are being cut to little more than the length of a TV show.”
Zombie will write the movie while on his upcoming concert tour, and then shoot it next year.
