For those who dont know, the notorious I Spit On Your Grave focuses on Jennifer Hills (Keaton granddaughter of Buster), a New York city slicker and magazine writer who retires to a secluded cottage in the woods in order to write her first novel. When she unintentionally riles up some local folk, Jennifer is brutally raped and beaten by a gang of rednecks. After somehow managing to survive the brutal attacks, Jennifer gradually recovers and goes about formulating a violent plot against the perpetrators who left her for dead.
The nastiest of the original video nasties and perhaps the only film on the original DPP list that still retains the power to appal and horrify modern audiences (more than justifying its previously banned status indeed its just be re-banned in Ireland), I Spit On Your Grave is such an unpleasant experience that now, even after 30-plus years, the BBFC still wont let this sick little puppy loose in the UK without a few cuts.
So what we have here is the most complete version of the film released in the UK thus far, with an extra few minutes of previously cut material included. Though not quite the ultimate edition as suggested, 101 Films release does boast decent presentation and sound, and apart from a couple of minutes of cuts, its a far more complete, unsettling and powerful experience than the previously released DVD version (which clocked in at a leaner and far less unpleasant 95 mins). Though were not sure about the re-watchability factor of such a disturbing movie, fans may well want to bag a copy of this longer version, though collectors and completists arent going to be contented with this censored edition. However, while disturbing, it should be noted that the movie actually has a lot more meat to it than a lot of the more recent torture porn efforts. Indeed its what makes it all the more powerful.
The extras feature a couple of goodies, including a mighty fine audio interview between the director and much-missed cult UK film magazine, DVD Monthly (RIP), plus an interesting interview with the films director. Also included is a bunch of articles written about the film, and some old TV and radio spots.
Overall Verdict: Hated by most but loved by many, I Spit On Your Grave enjoys an almost-uncut DVD release.
