Hollywood really needs to make up its mind. For years its been flirting with making a movie based on the great robot cartoon Voltron, with various companies tentatively developing a film, but at least three times in recent years the whole thing has fallen through long before cameras started rolling.
Part of the problem is that any Voltron movie would be insanely expensive, and many people don’t know it already, which makes studios nervous. It’s basically like Power Rangers, but in cartoon form and with a far more complex mythology. It follows the Galactic Alliance’s brightest young things, who each have Lion robots that can combine into the mightest battle robot in the universe – Voltron.
However they’re not ready to give up a Voltron film, and while it’s yet to find a studio home, JoBlo is reporting that Atlas Entertainment, which took control of the Voltron screen rights last year, is now nearly ready to make its pitch to potential investors. The package they’re offering isn’t just for a film based on the 1980s Japanese cartoon about giant robots who can’t stop fighting, but comes with screenwriters Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Conan) attached, as well as some very cool concept art images, which have now shown up online.
The images were created by Swedish artist Andree Wallin, who also illustrated Joseph Kosinki’s Oblivion. Although it’s way to early to say whether Voltron will get the big screen treatment this time, the concept art is fantastic, and suggest it could make for an absolutely wonderful movie.
