Oliver Hirschbiegel rose to international prominence with Downfall, about Hitler’s last days, however his move into Hollywood filmmaking didn’t exactly wow people, with The Invasion being roundly scoffed at and ignored (although that was as much the studio’s fault as the director’s). However Five Minutes Of Heaven was better received on the festival circuit, and now Variety reports that he’s planning a new movie that may receive even more attention.
Hirschbiebel is lining up a movie based on Swiss author Martin Suter’s novel, The Dark Side Of The Moon, a rather strange sounding tale of a corporate executive who takes magic mushrooms, which make him feel like he has almost god-like powers. He then decides to reject the material world and learn to survive in the wood, while those back home assume he’s killed himself.
David Marconi (Die Hard 4.0) is on scripting duties, with filming due to start in the spring, which suggest that unless he’s planning to make it very quickly, his planned German mafia hitman movie, The Angel Face, is on hold for the moment.
