Ever since True Lies first appeared in cinemas in 1994, there’s been talk of a sequel, initially stoked by James Cameron and Arnie, then kept alive over the last 16 years by Tom Arnold, who seems desperate to get a follow-up made, as it’s the only way anyone’s going to care about anything he’s doing ever again.
Last time Tom Arnold was stoking the True Lies 2 fires was last August, and now it appears there might actually be some sort of truth to it – although not in the form Tom was perhaps expecting. According to Deadline, True Lies is being developed as a TV series, with Rene Echevarria (Deep Space 9, The 4400, Medium, Castle) as showrunner/producer. Echevarria is in some ways the obvious choice as he worked with Cameron on Dark Angel.
The project is now at the stage where they’re ready to take it to the networks, with several channels already excited about the prospect of taking on a TV version of the fan favourties. However before you get too excited, Cameron’s previous efforts in the TV arena have sometimes stumbled over their expense, so it may be that with the director loath to compromise to the usual economics of TV (or film for that matter), the networks will balk at the expense.
Oh, and of course despite Tom Arnold’s desperation, there’s no guarantee he’ll have anything to do with it.
