With only one major new release at the US box office this weekend, Resident Evil: Afterlife had a fairly clear shot at the top spot, especially with less competition for 3D screens that most movies have faced this summer. Indeed its $27.7 million was the biggest opening take of any of the Resident Evil movies, suggesting the move to 3D was a smart one and that it has a good shot of becoming the most successful of the franchise’s films at the cinema by the end of its run.
That was it for new movies in the top 10, but in limited release, the Joaquin Phoenix documentary, I’m Still Here, failed to garner much audience interest, despite huge amounts of press. It took $104,000 on 19 screens, meaning its per screen average was actually less than Resident Evil: Afterlife, despite showing in 3,000 fewer theatres. Doing slightly better was the Katie Holmes dramedy The Romantics, which took a very respectable $44,000 on 2 screens, suggesting it may have a bright future as it expands onto more screens in the coming weeks.
