Ever since Columbine, filmmakers have been trying to find ways to make films about campus shootings, often coming at the stories from the side, because it’s such a difficult, emotive and contentious issue to deal with head-on. Beautiful Boy tackles it by focussing on the family of the killer, with Michael Sheen and Maria Bello as the parents of a boy (Kyle Gallner) who kills 21 people at his university, before turning the gun on himself. Ravaged by guilt and unable to understand what drove their son to do what he did, the couple face being either ripped apart or brought back together by the tragedy. It’s an interesting idea, and the film just premiered in Toronto, at the same time this trailer came online, so click below to take a look.
