It’s taken them a while, but Fox is now busy trying to find a director for Wolverine 2, and while some of the mooted names were almost to be expected, one whose emerged as a top candidate perhaps isn’t, Darren Aronofsky.
While the Requiem For A Dream and The Wrestler director may seem an odd choice, the fact is any director has to get Hugh Jackman’s approval, and so according to Deadline he’s reached out to Aronofsky, who directed Hugh in The Fountain, with the director now seriously considering the offer. While the movie is like nothing Aronofsky has attempted before, he had shown he’s not averse to mainstream flicks, having been attached to a remake of Robocop for a long time, which eventually fell through.
The other main contender for the Wolverine directing gig is apparently Twilight: Eclipse helmer David Slade, who met with Jackman over the weekend on the set of Real Steel. Many suspect it’s Slade who’ll eventually get the job, both because there’s a decent chance Aronofsky will say no, and also as he’s likely to make the studio happier, due to his record of genre pictures.
Robert Schwentke, director of the upcoming Red, was also in the running, but ruled himself out before meeting Jackman, so he can concentrate on other movies, such as an adaptation of Robert Ludlum’s The Osterman Weekend and RIPD.
Whoever gets the job, shooting is expected to begin next year.
